All - Digipak (group work)

Definition of a Digipak
Digipaks are a type of CD packaging made out of card stock or other heavy paper/cardboard material. Digipaks can flip open like a book, or it can have three parts, so that one portion of the packaging opens to the right and one to the left, with the CD in the centre.

Codes and Conventions of a Digipak
As a group we researched and looked at examples of digipaks. When looking at some of the example ( Ignacio Fernandez - Buscare) we discovered the typical codes and conventions of digipak which include:

  • Front and back cover
  • Back cover includes a track list with timings
  • Artist and the album names are placed on the front cover
  • Some may have a track list with the names of the composers underneath in small print.
  • Also on the back cover there is the record company name and sometimes their label.
  • At the bottom of the back cover there sometimes may be the artists website address.
  • There is a bar code/Qr code
  • Where the CD has been made.
  • Panels - different parts to the panels and different colours sometimes.
  • Sometimes there is a lyrics sheet you can pull out of part of the digipak.
  • Sometimes it can be special edition or a collective and could include a DVD.
Advantages of a digipak rather  than a standard Dual Case
  • You can recycle the material used to make the digipak  as it is cardboard not plastic
  • A digipak is cheaper to produce, making the distribution cost cheaper.
  • A digipak is a more up to date version of an LP which is basically a 12'' square cardboard, showing a resemblance to a digipak.
  • They cannot crack like Dual cases can, however they could rip or eventually over time fall apart.

EF- Director Case Study - Chris Cunningham

Chris Cunningham is an English born video music and film director, he was born 1970 in Reading Berkshire. Over the years he has directed many music videos and films, his first directorial debut was in 1997 when he directed the music video for "Come to daddy" by Aphex Twin  currently Aphex Twin are known for soundtracks to films such as "Four Lions" , "Blade", "Marie Antoinette" and "Children of men".
The video Cunningham directed "Come to daddy" was praised and raved about but also banned by many people in the business due to violence in the video, it was also banned in japan for being offensive to Mentally ill patients.

The accompanying music video (released in October 1997) was directed by Chris Cunningham and filmed on the same council estate where Stanley Kubrick shot many scenes in A Clockwork Orange.[6] The scene is shot around Tavy Bridge Shopping centre, Thamesmead, which was demolished in 2007.[6]The video opens with an old woman walking a dog in a grimy, industrial setting. The dog urinates on an abandoned television lying on the pavement, causing it to sputter unexpectedly into life. This unleashes an evil spirit, accompanied by a gang of small children, all of whom bear James' grinning face and who appear to inhabit the abandoned buildings. The children go around wreaking havoc, trashing an alley and chasing a man into his car. The demon (played by Al Stokes[7]) emerges from the television, screams in the woman's face, then gathers the children around him. The music video was positioned number 35 in 100 Greatest Scary Moments. - Source Wikipedia

Cunningham then went on to again direct another Aphex Twin video for the song "Window licker" in 1999 with Warp Records. He also directed the video for Bjorks "All is full of love" in 1998 this won multiple awards, including an MTV music video award for Breakthrough video and was nominated for a Grammy for the best short form music video. It was also the first ever music video to win a Gold Pencil at the D&AD awards.

Videos for Aphex Twins, " Come to daddy" and "Windowlicker' are perhaps his best known. Cunningham also directed the video for Madonna's "Frozen" which became an international hit and won the award for "Best special effects" at the 1998 MTV Music Video Awards.

He has also directed commercials for companies such as Gucci, Playstation, Nissan and
Orange.

MA - General Codes & Conventions Of Music Videos

Codes and Convetions

After looking at the different music videos I have a list of some basic rules many of these videos followed.

  1. Lip-syncing - the artist or band sing towards to camera, this is very common in genres such as pop and r&b.
  2. Short takes- this is done to keep the audience interested.
  3. Performance- this is one of the two main aspects that i have seen in the videos.
  4. A storyline- many of the videos followed a story.
  5. Choreography- Very typical in pop and r&b genres
  6. Male gaze- Having attractive woman on screen to appeal to the male audience.
  7. Shot variation- This is again done to kep interest with the target audience.
  8. Cross Cutting- Especially used when there is both concept and narrative- used togo between both parts.
